PVC Volfin roof membrane can be mounted on various types of roofs. This covering does not overload roof construction and retains plasticity even under minus outside temperature. The Fraunhof building engineering institute research has proven: the best solution in most cases is to leave old roof construction.

Today it is technically common to put new roof covering or improved thermal insulation layer with new roofing during roof repair even in those cases when old roof deck has dampness. Such decision is self-explanatory not only because of economical but ecological issues as well.

Removal of old roof deck and correct disposal of building materials is costly.

Therefore it is much more expensive to renew removed roof deck, install thermal and insulation layers, dispose building materials than just to install one additional roof covering.

It is ecologically practical to leave old roof deck. In such way specialized thrash disposal fields are not overloaded and recourses of raw materials are saved as well. It is purposeful to prolong material usage cycle with respect to durability as well. But is it possible from building – physical point? How does drying process take place? In order to answer these questions the JSC Henkel Bautechnik GmbH VOLFIN + Terason applied Fraunhof building engineering institute situated in Holzkirchene near Munchen to carry out research: “Drying process of roof deck using VOLFIN insulating roof coverings ".

Surfaces were tested under outdoor conditions

The Franuhof building engineering institute performed set of tests for VOLFIN roofings starting December 1999 and ending February 2002 m. under real, outdoor conditions. These well-known synthetic roof coverings materials were used during tests:
  • VOLFIN GV
  • VOLFIN GV SK
These materials have high durability due to high quality raw materials, production technique (extrusion) and very good diffusion.

It is derived from fact that dampness in separate areas of insulating layer does not cause any problems until structural strength is sufficient.

If insulating efficiency decreases due to dampness, it is tolerated because insulating materials will dry sooner or later. Condition: must be used proper, diffusion open restoration system.

The VOLFIN material stimulates fast drying

During test three 2,5 m 2 test mats of following composition were laid on reinforced concrete base.

 

  • Vapor insulation
  • Thermal insulation layer made from polyester (PS 20.40 mm thickness panels)
  • Three layer bituminous roof insulation
These materials were covered by:

VOLFINU GV with R 101/B, agglutinated
VOLFINU GV SK
VOLFINU GV SK on additional thermal layer

These temperature measuring points were set on test mats:

  • on the base
  • on old insulation layer
  • between old insulation layer and additional thermal layer on 3 rd mat
  • under VOLFINO GV or GV SK covering. Air temperature was measured at 5, 15 and 50 cm distance from roof covering.
In order to determine dampness 4 samples were taken during two-year period, starting 1999 year fourth quarter and ending 2002 year first quarter.

Evaluating test results the Fraunhof building engineering institute made explicit conclusions. According measured material dampness and thermal conductivity coefficient it can be concluded that during two year period both with and without additional thermal insulation roof coverings enable water soaked roof drying.

Two strong reasons

Why Volfin roofings does it better than the other? We give strong reasons. First: black color ensures high ray absorption coefficient. Black color does not reflect sunbeams but absorbs it instead. This causes high surface temperature and speeds up drying of layers bellow. In other words - higher surface temperature causes higher vapor pressure in thermal layer. Drying is much more effective than with standard bright bituminous covering. Second quality: low water vapor blocking coefficient sd. Values: for the 2,3 mm thick Volfin GV SK covering sd value is approximately 52!

Conclusion

Iš visa tai galima daryti išvadas: restauruoti stogus galima ekonomiškai ir ekologiškai optimaliai uždengiant juos Volfinu. Taigi galima palikti senąjį stogą, išnaudoti jo šiluminį potencialą ir pagerinti jį papildomu apšiltinimu, užtikrinant ilgalaikę patikimą izoliaciją. Ir kai pagrindas permirkęs, nesusidaro pūslės, jeigu sena danga perforuojama, kaip ir rekomenduojama. Kas Volfiną sąlygoja buti idealia medžiaga restauravimui, tas taip pat užtikrina jo panaudojimą naujose statybose. Tos pačios savybės, užtikrinančios senų dangų išdžiūvimą, naudingos ir tada, kai pav. statybos metu merkia lietūs. Kas iš pat pradžių apsisprendžia dėl Volfino, tam skaičiuoti statybos išlaidas daug lengviau. Volfino dangą galima dengti nelaukus, kol stogas išdžius, o uždengus, neabejoti, ar gerai pasielgei. Uždaryta likutinė drėgmė gali išgaruoti.
